Where Do Crocodiles Live?

Crocodiles live in rivers and wetlands of the jungle, hunting for fish and small animals in warm tropical waters. They're found across tropical Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Americas — anywhere there are warm rivers, lakes, and swamps. The Nile crocodile is one of the most well-known, living in rivers and lakes across sub-Saharan Africa. The saltwater crocodile — the world's largest reptile — lives in coastal waters and rivers from India to Australia.

Crocodiles are semi-aquatic, meaning they live both in water and on land. They love to bask (lie in the sun) on riverbanks and muddy shores to warm themselves up in the morning, then slide back into the water when they need to cool down or go hunting. The rivers and wetlands of tropical jungles provide everything a crocodile could want: warm water, plentiful food, and plenty of places to hide.

What Do Crocodiles Look Like?

Crocodiles look like they stepped right out of the dinosaur age — and that's because they've been on Earth since before the dinosaurs went extinct! They have long, powerful bodies covered in thick, bumpy scales that act like natural armor. Their color is usually olive green, gray, or brown, which makes them look remarkably like floating logs in the water — brilliant camouflage!

Crocodiles have four short but powerful legs, a long muscular tail, and a long, rounded snout filled with lots of sharp teeth. One of the easiest ways to tell a crocodile from an alligator is to look at the teeth: a crocodile's fourth tooth on the bottom jaw sticks out even when its mouth is closed! Their eyes, ears, and nostrils are all on top of their heads, so they can see, hear, and breathe while their whole body is hidden underwater.

How Do Crocodiles Live?

Crocodiles are patient hunters who spend a lot of time waiting quietly. They float just below the water's surface, looking like harmless logs, then strike swiftly when the moment is right. But crocodiles aren't always hunting — they spend a lot of their time simply resting and soaking up the warm sun.

Here's something surprising: crocodile mothers are actually very caring parents! A mother crocodile carefully guards her nest of eggs until they hatch. When the babies are ready to emerge, they make chirping sounds from inside the eggs, and the mother digs them out and gently carries them to the water in her mouth. Crocodile babies are tiny versions of their parents and stay near mom for protection during their first months of life.
