Where Do Deer Live?

Deer graze in forests and meadows, eating grass, leaves, and tender shoots. They're found on almost every continent (except Australia and Antarctica), making them one of the most widespread animals on Earth. White-tailed deer roam forests and meadows across North and South America. Red deer live in European forests. Reindeer (also called caribou) wander across Arctic tundra and boreal forests. Roe deer peek out of woodlands across Europe and Asia.

Deer love the edges of forests — places where the trees meet open meadows — because they get the best of both worlds: the shelter and safety of the trees, and the open grassy areas perfect for grazing. Forests give deer cover to hide in, shade in summer, and shelter from winter winds. Many deer are most active at dawn and dusk, when the light is soft and golden and the forest is at its most magical.

What Do Deer Look Like?

Deer are slender, elegant animals built for speed and grace. They have long, thin legs, a rounded body, and a short tail. Most deer are brown or reddish-brown in color, which helps them blend into the forest. White-tailed deer have a distinctive white underside to their tail that flashes like a warning flag as they run — it signals danger to other deer!

Many deer grow antlers — spectacular branching structures that can span several feet! Antlers are grown and shed every year, and they're made of one of the fastest-growing materials in the animal kingdom. Male deer (called bucks or stags) usually grow antlers; females (called does) usually don't. Baby deer (called fawns) are born with white spots that help them blend into dappled forest light — like nature's best camouflage.

How Do Deer Live?

Deer are herbivores — they eat only plants. They spend much of their day grazing and browsing: nibbling grass in open meadows, reaching up to eat leaves from low branches, and using their sensitive noses to find the tastiest plants. Deer have a special stomach system that lets them swallow food quickly and then bring it back up later to chew more thoroughly — called chewing cud!

Deer are naturally alert and cautious animals. Their large ears can rotate to pick up sounds from every direction, and their eyes are positioned on the sides of their head to give them a wide field of view — nearly 300 degrees! This means it's very hard to sneak up on a deer. When danger is sensed, deer use their incredible speed — up to 40 miles per hour — to bound away through the forest in graceful leaps.
