With their giant ears, long trunks, and kind eyes, elephants are truly extraordinary. 🐘

Where Do Elephants Live?

Elephants roam the jungles and grasslands of Africa and Asia, exploring huge territories in search of food and water. African elephants live in grasslands, forests, and bushlands across sub-Saharan Africa. Asian elephants — slightly smaller than their African cousins — make their homes in the tropical jungles and forests of South and Southeast Asia, including India, Thailand, and Sri Lanka.

Elephants need enormous amounts of space because they travel miles and miles every day looking for food. A single elephant can eat up to 300 pounds of plants every day, so they're always on the move through the jungle! They follow ancient routes passed down through generations, often following rivers and watering holes that their grandmothers and great-grandmothers knew about.

What Do Elephants Look Like?

Elephants are impossible to miss — they're enormous! An adult African elephant can weigh up to 14,000 pounds (that's heavier than a pickup truck!) and stand over 13 feet tall at the shoulder. Their most famous feature is, of course, their trunk — a long, flexible nose that can be used to grab food, drink water, give hugs, say hello, and even paint pictures!

African elephants have huge fan-shaped ears (shaped roughly like the continent of Africa!), while Asian elephants have smaller, rounder ears. Elephants also have tusks — long, curved ivory teeth that grow throughout their lives. Their skin is thick and gray, and despite being wrinkled, it's surprisingly sensitive — elephants can feel the lightest touch!

How Do Elephants Live?

Elephants are deeply social animals that live in tight-knit family groups called herds. A herd is led by the oldest and wisest female, called the matriarch. She remembers where to find water during dry seasons, how to avoid danger, and keeps the whole family safe. When a herd member is hurt or sad, the other elephants gather around to comfort them with gentle touches of their trunks.

Baby elephants (called calves) are cared for by the whole herd — aunts, cousins, older sisters all help the mom. Calves are born big — weighing around 200 pounds! They stay close to their mothers for many years, learning everything from how to use their trunk to which plants are good to eat. Elephants are known for their incredible memories, and they remember friends and family for decades.
