With enormous eyes that glow like lanterns, wings as silent as whispers, and the ability to turn its head almost all the way around, the owl is one of the most magical animals in the natural world. These night guardians of the forest have inspired wonder and awe in people for thousands of years. 🦉

Where Do Owls Live?

Owls nest high in forest trees and hunt quietly at night for mice and insects. With over 200 species of owls around the world, they've made their home in almost every habitat — from tropical rainforests to arctic tundra, from open grasslands to dense woodland. The great horned owl, barn owl, and tawny owl are familiar forest residents in North America and Europe, nesting in hollow trees or old buildings.

Owls are the undisputed rulers of the nighttime forest. While other birds are asleep, owls take to the air on silent wings, patrolling their territory with incredible efficiency. During the day, they roost (rest) in trees, tucked against branches or hidden in hollow trunks where they blend in perfectly with the bark. Their mottled brown and gray feathers make them nearly invisible even in plain sight!

What Do Owls Look Like?

Owls are immediately recognizable: large, round heads with flat faces, enormous forward-facing eyes, and a short, curved beak. Those big eyes are one of an owl's most important features — they're designed specifically for seeing in near-total darkness. An owl's eyes are so large relative to its head that they can't actually move in their sockets (unlike human eyes). Instead, owls compensate with their incredible neck, which can rotate up to 270 degrees — almost three-quarters of a full circle!

Different owls come in different sizes and colors. The tiny elf owl is smaller than a sparrow. The great grey owl is one of the largest, with a wingspan of up to 5 feet! Most owls have brown, gray, or white feathers with speckled patterns that provide excellent camouflage against tree bark. Barn owls have a distinctive heart-shaped face and ghostly white underparts.

How Do Owls Live?

Owls are solitary hunters that patrol their own territory. They hunt mainly at night using two extraordinary senses: their amazing night vision (their eyes can gather light far more effectively than human eyes) and their extraordinary hearing. An owl's ears are slightly offset — one is higher than the other — which allows them to pinpoint the exact location of a sound in three dimensions. An owl can catch a mouse hidden under a thick layer of snow, guided by sound alone!

Owls are famous for being silent fliers. Their wing feathers have a special fringe along the edges that breaks up air turbulence, eliminating almost all flight sound. This lets them swoop toward prey without making a single noise — the mouse never hears them coming! Owls regurgitate (cough up) neat little pellets containing the indigestible parts of their meals — bones, fur, feathers — making owl pellets great things to study if you want to discover what an owl has been eating!
