That's life for a polar bear, the undisputed king and queen of the Arctic. These magnificent white giants are perfectly built for one of Earth's most extreme environments, and they are truly remarkable animals. 🐻‍❄️

Where Do Polar Bears Live?

Polar bears live on ice and snowy Arctic landscapes, hunting in the cold ocean. They roam across the sea ice and coastal areas of the Arctic Ocean, spanning parts of Norway, Russia, the United States (Alaska), Canada, and Greenland. Polar bears are considered marine mammals because they spend so much of their lives on and around the sea — they can swim vast distances and spend months on floating sea ice far from shore.

The sea ice is the polar bear's most important habitat. It serves as their hunting platform, their highway between areas, and their resting place. As the Arctic seasons change, polar bears follow the retreating and advancing ice, sometimes traveling thousands of miles in a year. Polar bears are true nomads of the frozen north, constantly moving across their enormous territory in search of food and suitable ice.

What Do Polar Bears Look Like?

Polar bears are massive — males can weigh up to 1,500 pounds and measure over 8 feet long, making them the largest land predators on Earth! Their fur looks white or creamy yellow, providing perfect camouflage in the snowy Arctic. Interestingly, each individual hair is actually transparent (clear) and hollow, and it's the way light reflects off the hairs that makes the fur appear white!

Polar bears have thick fur and special fat under their skin to keep them warm in freezing weather! They have a dense undercoat of thick, woolly fur close to the skin, plus longer outer guard hairs that repel water. Underneath all that fur is black skin, which absorbs the sun's warmth on the rare clear Arctic day. Their giant paws are like built-in snowshoes — wide and slightly webbed for swimming, with rough pads and tiny bumps for traction on ice.

How Do Polar Bears Live?

Polar bears are mostly solitary animals, with the exception of mothers with cubs. Mother polar bears are incredibly dedicated parents! In late autumn, pregnant females dig a snow den and give birth to one to three tiny cubs (usually twins) in the warmth of the den. The cubs are born small, blind, and helpless, but they grow quickly on their mother's rich milk. Mother and cubs emerge from the den in spring, when the cubs are about the size of a small dog.

Polar bears are excellent swimmers and will spend hours or even days in the frigid Arctic waters. They use their large front paws as paddles and their back legs as rudders. In summer, when sea ice melts and food is harder to find, polar bears can fast (go without eating) for months, living off their stored fat reserves — much like bears hibernating in winter!
