Where Do Seals Live?

Seals live in the cold Arctic ocean waters and on ice floes throughout the Arctic regions. They're found near the coasts of Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Russia, and other Arctic nations, where cold water provides plenty of fish and squid to hunt. Seals haul out (come onto ice or land) to rest, sleep, and raise their pups, but they're most at home in the water.

Different seal species live in different Arctic habitats — some prefer rocky coastlines, others live on pack ice (floating sheets of ice), and some even live in ice holes they maintain throughout the winter!

What Do Seals Look Like?

Seals have sleek, streamlined bodies that are perfectly shaped for swimming. They're covered in fur that's usually gray, brown, or spotted with darker markings — colors that help them blend in with water and ice. Under their fur, they have a thick layer of blubber (fat) that keeps them warm in the freezing Arctic water.

A seal's flippers are specially adapted for swimming — their front flippers help them steer and their powerful back flippers propel them through the water like a fish's tail! They can rotate their back flippers under their body, allowing them to move on land, though they're much slower and more awkward on ice than in water.

Seals have big, dark, intelligent eyes that work well both underwater and above water. Their whiskers (called vibrissae) are incredibly sensitive and help them detect fish movements in murky water. A seal's nose is simple and doesn't have external ear flaps like humans have — just ear holes!

How Do Seals Live?

Their bodies have special adaptations: they can slow their heart rate, their blood redirects to vital organs, and their lungs collapse to prevent nitrogen buildup that would give them the bends.

Seals are mostly solitary hunters, though they gather together on ice floes to rest, sleep, and socialize. They're very vocal animals and communicate with each other through barks, whistles, and underwater vocalizations that sound almost musical!

Mother seals are dedicated caregivers who give birth to pups on ice floes. Seal pups are born with thick, fluffy white fur (called lanugo) that keeps them warm. Mothers nurse their pups for just a few weeks before the pups learn to swim and fend for themselves. This is one of nature's fastest weaning processes!
