Turtle

Discover the amazing sea turtle — a creature that has swam in Earth's oceans since the time of dinosaurs and can live over 100 years.

🌍 Habitat: ocean

Imagine an animal that has survived from the time of dinosaurs all the way to today! Sea turtles are some of Earth's oldest survivors, gliding gracefully through the ocean for over 100 million years. These gentle, long-lived creatures travel thousands of miles across oceans, living for over 100 years. 🐢

Where Do Turtles Live?

Sea turtles live in oceans throughout the world, from warm tropical waters to cooler temperate regions. Different sea turtle species prefer different ocean habitats — some live in shallow coastal areas, while others roam the open ocean. You'll find sea turtles in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, as well as in tropical seas and even cooler regions!

Sea turtles are incredible travelers! Many sea turtle species migrate thousands of miles between their feeding grounds and their nesting beaches. Some turtles spend their whole lives traveling, visiting the same beaches where they were born to lay their own eggs many years later!

What Do Turtles Look Like?

Sea turtles have distinctive bodies completely covered by a hard shell made of bone covered with tough plates called scutes. The shell's shape varies by species — some shells are smooth and sleek, while others are bumpy or ridged. Most sea turtle shells are dark colored — brown, black, or olive — to help them blend in with ocean water.

Unlike land turtles, sea turtles have flippers instead of feet. Their front flippers are long and powerful, used like arms to swim gracefully through the water. Their back flippers are smaller and help with steering and balance. Sea turtles move through the water with a beautiful, gliding motion that looks almost like they're flying!

Sea turtle heads are relatively small compared to their bodies, and they have eyes positioned on the sides of their heads. Interestingly, sea turtles cry salty tears to get rid of excess salt they ingest from ocean water — so sometimes it looks like they're crying, but they're actually just managing their salt intake!

How Do Turtles Live?

Most sea turtles are herbivores or omnivores, depending on the species. Some turtles eat mostly jellyfish, others eat sea grass, and some eat a mix of plants and animals. Sea turtles are peaceful ocean dwellers who spend their days swimming, grazing on seaweed, and hunting jellyfish in the open ocean.

Sea turtles have incredible navigation abilities. Hatchlings (baby turtles) instinctively know to head toward the ocean, and many sea turtles remember their birthplace decades later, returning to the exact same beach to lay their own eggs! Scientists believe turtles use Earth's magnetic field to navigate across vast ocean distances.

Sea turtles are solitary creatures most of the time, but they gather in groups at feeding areas. They're incredibly long-lived — some sea turtles live over 100 years! This means a sea turtle could see you born, watch you grow up, and still be swimming in the ocean years from now!
