Where Do Whales Live?

Whales live in all the world's oceans, from polar Arctic waters to tropical equatorial seas. Different whale species prefer different ocean habitats — some live near the poles where the water is cold and food is abundant, while others travel between polar feeding areas and tropical breeding areas. Whales are incredible migrators, some traveling up to 12,000 miles each year!

Whales love areas where food is plentiful. Most great whales eat tiny krill (shrimp-like creatures) that are most abundant in cold polar waters. Many whales migrate thousands of miles between their feeding grounds in polar waters and their breeding and birthing grounds in warmer tropical or subtropical waters!

What Do Whales Look Like?

Whales are the largest animals on Earth! A blue whale can grow up to 100 feet long — longer than three school buses parked end to end! Despite their enormous size, whales have streamlined bodies built for swimming, with smooth skin, a large dorsal fin on their back, and powerful tail flukes.

Most whales are dark colored — gray, blue-gray, or black — which helps them blend in with ocean water. Their heads are enormous, especially compared to their bodies. Some whales, like humpback whales, have long pectoral fins (side fins) that look almost like wings.

A whale's most distinctive feature depends on the species. Blue whales have an enormous mouth that can hold 90 tons of water! Some whales have blowholes on top of their heads that they use to breathe. When whales surface and exhale, they create a spray of water that can be seen from far away!

How Do Whales Live?

Most great whales eat only krill — tiny shrimp-like creatures no bigger than your pinky finger! To eat, whales take enormous mouthfuls of ocean water filled with krill, then filter out the water through special baleen plates in their mouths, keeping only the nutritious krill. A single blue whale can eat up to 4 tons of krill every single day!

Whales are highly intelligent and social animals. Many whales live in groups called pods. Some whales travel together for their entire lives. Whales are famous for singing — humpback whales have complex songs that they use to communicate with each other across vast ocean distances. Scientists believe whale songs are passed down through generations, like a cultural tradition!

Baby whales, called calves, are born live and are nursed with mother's milk. A mother whale will protect her calf fiercely and teach it everything it needs to know about finding food and avoiding danger. Whale calves are incredibly large at birth — a blue whale calf can weigh as much as an adult elephant!
